I’m passionate about consumer goods because they provide the best blank canvas for brand development–and that is what’s exciting to me as a marketer. What I mean by that is: consumer goods are generally inherently simple. They don’t have the complex features of, for example, technology products to get bogged down in or to steer the brand’s unique value proposition or positioning. As a result, consumer goods marketing requires marketing professionals to dig deeper into the emotional and self-expressive motivations of consumers and really get creative about what the brand stands for and what sets it apart from competitors.

I love consumer goods because I feel like they’re making an impact on people’s lives, particularly if they’re functional and environmentally friendly. When I do, sustainable options such as beeswax wraps or reusable bags give individuals an easy way to adopt environmentally sound habits without fundamentally reshaping their lives. There’s something so satisfying about designing products that not only solve everyday problems – such as eliminating single-use plastics – but also leave a healthier planet. When customers talk about how the transition to beeswax wraps saved them from waste, or started conversations about sustainability in their families, for instance, it just reminds me of why we do this work.
For me, designing consumer products is a way of marrying art and function. Creating practical, aesthetic, and sustainable alternatives to plastic has taught me just how much consumers care about openness and quality. People connect with brands on the basis of value and utility and it feels good to have something they can feel that way. Not to sell products but to cultivate a community of people who care about making wise decisions. This unified vision is what inspires me and keeps me inspired to continually develop and broaden the line of sustainable solutions we provide.
