One-size-does-not-fit-all

To put forth a “best career option” for a single mother (or father or other caregivers) would at best be generic. And not as helpful or meaningful as providing career advice on a one-on-one basis. Each individual’s situation is unique to them. Financial needs and outside support, age and number of children, availability of a supportive network of family and friends, prior experience, education, and other credentials, and health and medical conditions, among others, are factors to be considered. What works for one might not work for another.Said otherwise, the best step for a single mother to determine the “best career option” is to seek out resources and advice specific to their situation. One-size-fits-all just doesn’t cut it here.

Become a Writer

I’m not a single mother, but I hire a lot of moms as writers for my PR firm. It’s not that I have a soft spot for single moms…(ok, maybe I do), but based on the feedback I get, moms like writing work because it gives them good pay ($350 to $800 per article) while being flexible. For example, when I bring on a new client my firm often writes an article to pitch to the media.

To get an article written, I turn to my team of writers and offer it up to my first choice. They can take it or refuse it, it’s up to them. Once a writer takes an assignment, I don’t care when they work on it, I just need it done by the deadline. This means a single mom working with me can work on the article when it’s convenient for her, whether that’s mornings, nights, weekends, or between dropping off one child and picking up another. A good writer can crank out several articles per week and do quite well, and I’m only one of many employers looking for great article writers.
