What Is One Of The Most Important Things In A Career In Your 30s?

To help you maximize your career while in your 30s, we asked career coaches and business leaders this question for their best insights. From taking steps to have healthcare coverage to upgrading your skills toward specialization, there are several things that are considered most important to your career advancement while in your 30s.

Here are 12 important things in a career while in your 30s:

  • Take Steps To Have Healthcare Coverage
  • Endeavor To Establish a Work-Life Balance
  • Be Clear About Your Career Goals and Direction
  • Decide on The Top Roles to Aspire To
  • Focus on Creating Networks
  • Know Your Worth To Take Charge of Your Career
  • Seek Opportunities for Growth
  • Start Saving
  • Focus On Your Goals
  • Establish a Retirement Plan
  • Upgrade Your Skills Toward Specialization

Take Steps To Have Healthcare Coverage

Careers can go in different directions when you’re in your 30s. If you’ve reached the point where you know what you want to do for the rest of your working life, look for the right company to join that will provide you with the benefits you need, especially health benefits. If you’re still unsure about where you are in life – and not covered by any health insurance plan – look for a path toward obtaining it fast.

Any accident, ailment, or hospital visit can wipe you out financially if you’re not covered. When you’re in your 30s, you’re at greater risk of getting struck by an unforeseen illness or autoimmune disorder. You never want to go long without having health coverage. This is something to take seriously when you enter your 30s.

Endeavor To Establish a Work-Life Balance

When young employees start their first job, they’re often super enthusiastic and tend to work overtime. They want to learn fast and apply the theoretical knowledge gained during their education to real-life situations.

Also, they very often want to prove to themselves that they can achieve professional success. While this kind of approach is normal at the beginning of our career, it’s not sustainable in the long run.

In your 30s, you should look for more work-life balance in your career. It’s important to focus on things that are important for your private life such as relationships, family, hobbies, and passions.

However, you also want to take steps to advance your career. My advice is to constantly check what’s going on in your industry and look for creative ways to improve your skills. You can complete an online course, participate in a conference, or become a mentor. There are many opportunities that can help you stay motivated, but still have time for your private life.

Be Clear About Your Career Goals and Direction

Understanding what you are not only passionate about but uniquely positioned to influence is important to determining your perfect role in your 30s. We spend so much of our time at work and if you want to be truly content, it’s important to know how your work impacts society overall and how you are leveraging your specific skills to drive that impact.

Why are you motivated to open your laptop every day? Why are you so willing to give so much of your time to your company and brand? Why are you so passionate about your end users and their experience? With those answers, you will be able to guide your career (at any age).

Decide on The Top Roles to Aspire To

The 30s can be a seminal part of your professional life because the trajectory of your career arc could be dictated by the decisions you make in your 30s. If you’ve settled into an industry that you like, you will have to decide whether you’re more comfortable being a top producer or being promoted to a manager.

There are a lot of pros and cons to weigh before making such a decision. There is stability and likely more money in being a manager (unless it’s a commission-heavy job). On the other hand, you get to bask in the limelight of being a star in your firm if you’re a top producer or performer. You also don’t have to deal with the administrative tasks and other hang-ups that come with being a manager.

Focus on Creating Networks

In your 30s, this is the time you should focus on what you want to do next in your career. Some of us are blessed to have plans in place. However, it takes more time for others to know what they need to do next. Have you heard the saying, “Two brains are better than One?” When you have created a network of people that can assist you in your career, you can lean into their knowledge, insights, and guidance.

The best time to create your network is in your 30’s. In your 30’s you have gained enough exposure, and experience and have the ability to articulate what is required from your network.

In addition, within your network, I recommend you create a personal board of directors.

Know Your Worth To Take Charge of Your Career

As an event DJ, I opened my eyes in my 30s to just how much agencies and event producers were profiting off of my services. Many firms are charging anywhere from three to ten thousand for talent alone. This includes DJs, emcees, and bands. Meanwhile, the talent may see only about 25% of that bill.

This led to me finally making the smart decision to create an S-Corp, market myself through strong SEO, and deal directly with the end client. My team charges for entertainment, planning, and production and nets 100% with no middle person who simply gets a cut for making introductions. Know your worth and speak for yourself.

Seek Opportunities for Growth

In your 30s, your career may reach a plateau that becomes your comfort zone. It’s important to consciously pull yourself out of this by seeking opportunities to grow and expand. Look for projects that are unfamiliar or roles that may challenge you. This way, you can continue to build new skills and continue to level up, even if it is subtly, in your career.

Start Saving

A little saving goes a long way as you mature and pursue different opportunities in a career search. In contrast, I know people with very little margin in either their savings or cost of living. This dynamic inevitably creates a short-term bidding war, and salary becomes the only priority in a job search. Many of the best opportunities are less structured in a traditional sense.

Many also come with better long-term payouts, but wages are more modest in the near term. Some jobs that don’t compete on salary compete on lifestyle perks, networks, and missions. Whatever the case, financial reserves will help you stay out of the short-term bidding war.

Focus On Your Goals

There are many important things to consider in a career in your 30s, but one of the most important is experience. It’s especially important to gain valuable experience in your field of interest and to identify your long-term career goals.

In your 30s, you’re likely to have more responsibilities than you did in your 20s, so it’s crucial to be strategic about where you focus your time and energy. You may also want to consider pursuing leadership roles or continuing education opportunities to help further your career. The most important thing is to stay focused on your goals and work hard towards achieving them.

Establish a Retirement Plan

It is natural to enjoy your life with the fruit of your hard labor. Living in the present is the best way to live, however, never neglect your future because today’s ‘you’ is the one responsible for tomorrow’s ‘you’. The most important thing in a career when in your 30s is to establish a retirement plan.

A retirement plan doesn’t end with just a few hundred thousand of savings. Actually, it can be eaten up by inflation. It is a series of efforts, through financial literacy in order to attain financial freedom as young as possible. Financial literacy is not about how much you earn, it is about how much you keep. The money that I was able to keep is then used to buy retirement plans, and invest in order to further grow my assets.

There are a lot of factors that should be taken into consideration when talking about a retirement plan. It goes beyond just supporting your basic needs, but also must deal with healthcare costs and long-term care costs which are both considerably expensive.

Consider Career Changes Where Necessary

If you’re in your 30s, reflect on your career. Think about what you have achieved and whether you find these work achievements satisfying. Also, think about your vision for career development in the coming years. If you feel a sense of professional fulfillment, then great. If not, think about changing course. The 30s is the best time to make potential changes in your career.

You already have many years of experience, which employers value. Moreover, there are still many challenges ahead that will enable you to develop further and climb the career ladder. Perhaps you would like to start your own business? And how about changing industries? It’s not too late.

Upgrade Your Skills Toward Specialization

My thirties were the most uplifting period in my life. My goals were specific and aligned with my resources. My aim for working was not only tied to earning a living. It was to achieve success and fulfillment.

Working for over five years meant that I had the experience that most companies are looking for. But I did not want to just work. I wanted to work in the best company and in the best position. I spent 3 years of my thirties upgrading my degree to a master’s. I spent a large chunk of time specializing in areas I’m good at. Work becomes more interesting when you know exactly what you need to do and how to actually do it.

Companies pay top dollar for employees who have specialized skills. It also becomes easier to attain leadership roles and positions once your specialty in a certain field is well defined. By the time I was in my forties I was working as a manager in one of the best companies in my country. I can attribute my success to my specialized skills.
