Exploring Wine’s Rich Cultural Tapestry

I am passionate about wine because it offers a rich history, cultural significance, and complex sensory experience. I enjoy exploring the stories behind Old- and New-World wines and Port, understanding their production processes, and sharing my discoveries with others. I am fueled by the connections and social experiences that wine exploration brings, especially the opportunities to visit wine regions around the world and meet with a diverse community of enthusiasts and experts.

Artistry and Craftsmanship in Each Bottle

My passion for wine and spirits stems from a deep appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship behind each bottle. The process of creating fine spirits is a blend of science and creativity, where every step—from the selection of ingredients to the distillation process—requires precision and innovation. I’m fascinated by how different ingredients and techniques can create unique flavors and profiles, reflecting the rich heritage and traditions of various cultures.

This passion extends beyond the product itself; it’s about the experiences and connections that fine spirits can foster. Sharing a well-crafted spirit with friends or family can turn an ordinary moment into a memorable occasion. The complexity of flavors in wine and spirits also mirrors the diversity of human experiences, making each bottle a journey of discovery.

Owning a spirits company also allows me to be involved in the entire process, from concept to creation, and to contribute to the industry’s evolution. I am driven by the opportunity to bring exceptional products to market, to innovate, and to share my love for this craft with others, enhancing their enjoyment and appreciation of fine beverages.

Wine as a Cultural and Travel Gateway

As a travel blogger, I am often asked why I am so passionate about wine and spirits. For me, it goes far beyond just enjoying a glass of wine or a well-made cocktail. Wine and spirits are the gateway to experiencing different cultures, traditions, and flavors from around the world.

As someone who has been traveling to Europe for over 35 years, I have had the opportunity to visit countless wineries and distilleries in various countries. Each time, I am amazed by the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into creating these unique beverages. But what truly captures my heart is the stories behind them.

I believe that wine and spirits are not simply drinks, but they are a reflection of the people, history, and landscapes of the regions they come from. They provide a window into the soul of a place and its people, allowing us to connect with them on a deeper level.

Wine’s Historical Significance and Social Bonding

I first became enamored with wine when I became aware of its place in history. I realized anything that has lasted well over 5,000 years should be considered more closely. The history is fascinating, and the one thing I discovered is that, other than water most of the time, wine was safe to drink.

As I got older and started learning about grapes, the effects of regions, and the influence of the individual winemaker (the French call this “terroir”), I began a never-ending journey to learn as much as I can through tasting and researching. This odyssey has taught me about countries, cultures, and people.

Lastly, wine brings people together, often over food. Food and wine are virtually synonymous. More business dealings, political negotiations, and simple commerce have been discussed and planned over wine than perhaps any other beverage. Birthdays, anniversaries, religious rites, and more have all been conducted over wine. No one has ever said, “Pour me a glass of wine; I’m going out to dig a ditch!” Wine is always associated with celebration.

Galileo stated, “Wine is sunlight, held together by water,” which perfectly encapsulates the experience of partaking in wine.

From Land to Celebratory Wine Crafting

I fell in love with wine while working in a French restaurant, where I had the chance to taste amazing Bordeaux wines and see how they worked with and complemented food. I was always curious and wanted to learn. And I loved the idea of how something that came from the land each year could be put together to make something people cherished and enjoyed with friends and family. So, I came to the United States to study viticulture and enology and began my journey with wine.

For me, I believe a blended wine is a more complete wine. Each vintage is a blank canvas. Then it’s a puzzle that we put together, arranging each piece to create a wine in harmony. It is the pursuit of crafting a wine that makes you want to come back to the glass for more that drives my passion every day.

Community and Storytelling Through Spirits

My favorite thing about wine and spirits is the sense of community they instill, the ability they have to bring people together. Whether it’s single-village mezcals or hyper-local Caribbean rums, every spirit tells a story. Every spirit is a product of an entire community, the ingredients they have to work with, the innovations they have engineered out of necessity. At their best, bars and restaurants are communal spaces, spaces to share stories and connect with friends and strangers alike.
