What is one good career option with the beauty and fashion industry?

To help you find the best career fit in the beauty and fashion industry, we asked HR experts and business leaders this question for their thoughts. From eyelash technician to influencer, there are several great careers that may be exactly what you’re looking for in the fashion and beauty industry.

Here are seven good career options within the beauty and fashion industry:

  • Eyelash Technician
  • Social Media, Content Creation, And Digital Strategy
  • Fashion Marketing
  • Editor
  • Hair Stylist
  • Influencer
  • Makeup Artist

Eyelash Technician

Becoming an eyelash technician is a very lucrative opportunity for those wanting to enter the beauty industry. This market has seen incredible growth over the last few years, and it doesn’t show signs of slowing down! I wrote this in-depth article about a lash technician’s earning potential, but I will give you the cliff notes. While the average salary of a technician is $47,396, this is just that—an average. For example (assuming the cost of the product is $4 or less for each service, which is average), say I charge $150 for full sets, and average $55 fills. If I take approx. 20-25 clients a week, I have an opportunity to make upwards of $100k a year!

Social Media, Content Creation, And Digital Strategy

The fashion and beauty industry have seen incredible growth in recent years due to the rise of social media. These platforms have given large household names as well as small indie brands so much more visibility and potential for growth, which is great news for marketers! Some positions in this space that may be promising are social media manager, content creator, and digital strategist. I feel these are great positions for creative and technically savvy individuals as demand is only growing, and for brands to stand out, they know they need to invest in these departments!

Fashion Marketing

Many folks overlook the fact that the beauty and fashion industry includes all the same occupations as a corporation: HR, accounting, and marketing. Companies may have just one or two fashion designers but dozens of marketing professionals. What really sets Versace, Gucci, or Sephora apart from Target is branding, marketing, and the ability to create messages that resonate with a specific audience. If you are successful at marketing the product, the growth potential is unlimited.

Editor

Becoming an editor creates many opportunities to interact with influential individuals in the fashion and beauty industry. Some examples are that an editor gains direct access to interview top experts, invites to major industry events, and is privy to new products and services before they are made known to the public. There is a misconception that the role of an editor is to write and edit content, but that is far from the truth. An editor is a rewarding position with unlimited opportunities for growth.

Hair Stylist

A great career in the beauty industry is hairstylist. I started as a hairstylist and have gone on to build my company around my love and passion for not only the beauty industry but for hair. You can really channel your creativity and effort into creating and crafting the perfect hairstyles to match your clients. It is rewarding and a fun outlet to express yourself!

Influencer

The influencer route is the way to go these days, and no, I’m not saying that because you can do it from the comfort of your home, travel whenever you want, make your own schedule, etc. While all those stereotypes of influencers have a little bit of truth to them, the reality is being an influencer with a consistent income is really hard to come by and takes a lot of work and a lot of hours. The reason I say influencer is we are seeing a shift in the industry from ideals to authenticity. People no longer want to see models with unattainable beauty standards. They want to see real people with bodies that come in all shapes and sizes wearing the brand. When we are looking to sell our apparel, we want to hire influencers with that authentic appeal, so our target clients fall in love with our style. With the platform that social media gives this trend to authenticity, I just don’t see being an influencer as a way to earn a living going away any time soon.

Makeup Artist

Being a makeup artist is one of the highest paying career options within the beauty and fashion industry. The basic educational requirement to enter this field is perhaps a high school diploma, although, in some countries, one is required to have a professional license to carry out the work. The majority of makeup artists are freelancers, but there are some production companies that hire full-time makeup artists. The average hourly wage for a makeup artist ranges from $10-$50.
