Chemistry as a Journey of Discovery
Chemistry excites me because it’s everywhere in our lives—it’s in us, our food, and the world we call home. It’s not just about complex formulas; it’s a mix of hands-on experiments and brainy challenges that make it both tough and practical.
What truly fascinates me is how chemistry has shaped our history. Landmark discoveries by figures like Pasteur, Haber-Bosch, and Curie have revolutionized medicine, agriculture, and technology, reshaping the world as we know it. These pivotal moments inspire me to explore the boundless potential of chemistry to address contemporary challenges and enhance the quality of life.
Yet, what sets chemistry apart is its accessibility and inherent enjoyment. It’s a field where anyone, regardless of age or background, can engage in hands-on experimentation and uncover the mysteries of the natural world. For me, chemistry is not merely an academic pursuit; it’s a journey of discovery and wonder that continually enriches our understanding of the universe.

Unveiling Nature’s Workings Through Chemistry
As a chemist, my passion for chemistry arises from its capacity to unveil the workings of nature. Chemistry allows us to comprehend how atoms and molecules interact, revealing the basic principles governing our world. The excitement of discovery in the lab, whether it’s identifying a new compound or understanding a reaction’s mechanism, drives my interest in the subject. Additionally, chemistry plays a vital role in tackling global issues, such as developing sustainable energy sources and creating essential medicines.

Advancing Sustainability with Chemistry
I’m passionate about chemistry as an advocate for sustainability and ecological conservation. Holding strong values in conservation and ethical ecotourism aligns well with what guests at Honest Eco appreciate.
My knowledge in chemistry, along with physics and biology, played a big part in our organization’s achievements. Just two years after starting, we designed and built the first lithium-ion hybrid electric boat for charter in the U.S. This boat, named SQUID, has been running since 2019. It has improved the experience for Honest Eco’s guests while also reducing our environmental footprint. This led to our company getting the top rating on TripAdvisor for all tours in Key West.
Beyond that, I think chemistry is key in finding new ways to cut down on pollution and its effects on people’s health. Using green and sustainable chemistry approaches can help eliminate or reduce the harm caused by dangerous chemicals in the environment.

Chemistry’s Impact on Health and Beauty
I love chemistry because it plays a big role in the beauty industry. My career began with a top-notch degree in Medical Imaging from the University of Exeter. It was there that I found out how much I enjoy research. After my degree, I worked as a qualified radiographer. This job took me to the UK, where I worked with the NHS and was part of the gastrointestinal imaging research team. I also worked in New Zealand as a Medical Radiation Technologist. At the heart of all this is a good understanding of chemistry!
The health and beauty industry is always changing and coming up with new and exciting products. I wanted to bring together information about different aspects of health and beauty in one place. My background in research and understanding of chemistry has been really helpful in finding good sources. I often read journal articles to learn about the methods and products we talk about.

Nutrition Through Understanding Biochemistry
As a clinical nutritionist, it’s pretty obvious why I’m into chemistry. Nutrition is biochemistry. In my job, it’s crucial to understand the chemistry of how the body processes and uses different nutrients, and also how common health issues work. This knowledge is key to advising people on healthy living and physical fitness.
In my area of work, it’s expected that you have a good grasp of chemistry, biology, and statistics, even if you’re not working in research or a clinical setting. Chemistry is what lets us understand our field deeply, whether it’s the basics or more complex aspects. Often, when you’re faced with a real-world problem or question, it’s a great chance to go back and look at a specific chemistry concept again.
