I’d always been interested in retail, but I was working with a non-profit organization. It was really important to me to work on something I was passionate about, but I couldn’t help but think about all the things that I might miss out on by not having a job in retail.I had spent so much time with people who wanted to have better lives but did not know how to get there or what they needed to do. It made me feel like there was something wrong with me for not being able to get them there myself.
So when the opportunity came up for me to take over as manager of a small store in my neighborhood, it seemed like the perfect fit: it would give me a chance to try out a new career path while still maintaining some of my connections with people who needed help. It was challenging at first—the store had been struggling and its previous manager had done little to improve things. But after a few months, we were turning a profit and seeing more customers than ever before!
