### Interactive Pixelated Character Costume

One Halloween, I went out as a pixelated character. I wore a black morphsuit that had different colored fabric dots stuck to it. Then, I used plywood and squares of paint to make a pixelated face mask that matched the Velcro dots.

It was a fun and unique costume that combined my love of electronics with the Halloween spirit. Plus, it was interactive because people could move the Velcro dots on my costume and make their own pixel art images as the night went on.

### Humorous Haunted GPS Outfit

One unique Halloween costume I did in the past was a “Haunted GPS.” I wore a black outfit with a cardboard GPS screen strapped to my chest, complete with blinking LED lights and spooky voice recordings. I also carried a cardboard steering wheel.

It was a humorous twist on technology meeting the supernatural, and I created the costume by repurposing old electronics and using a lot of black paint and cardboard. It was a hit at the Halloween party, and everyone got a kick out of the spooky directions I gave them throughout the night.

### Clever The Office Character Disguise

My absolute favorite Halloween costume idea was going as Jim’s version of “Dave” from The Office. All I had to do was wear Jim’s work clothes: a shirt, a tie, pants, and the icing on the cake, a sticker with the name Dave on it. The best part about this costume was that only true fans of the show could understand the reference, and I have never gotten more compliments on a Halloween costume ever!

### Time Traveler with Era Elements

I chose to dress up as a time traveler one Halloween, which got me a lot of attention. In my case, the idea was to make it look like I had traveled through time and brought back things from each age. I chose a classic black suit, added futuristic trinkets like LED glasses and a digital watch, and carried a vintage leather suitcase full of odd things like an antique quill pen, a toy dinosaur, and a pocket watch.

To finish the look, I put gray lines in my hair with temporary hair color and added fake gears and cogs to the suit for a steampunk touch. The costume was a hit because it got people talking about history and time travel, and it was a fun way to put together pieces from different eras to make a fun outfit.

### Thrifted Mad Hatter Ensemble

TAs an avid fan of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, I decided to bring the quirky and eccentric character of the Mad Hatter to life for Halloween one year. It was a challenging but exciting process that involved gathering various pieces from thrift stores and creating my own accessories.

I started off with a base outfit of a black blazer, striped pants, and a colorful vest, reminiscent of the Mad Hatter’s unique style. I then added layers of mismatched shirts, ties, and scarves to give the costume more depth. The most fun part was creating the hat. Using a plain top hat as my base, I glued on pieces of fabric, feathers, and playing cards to make it look like the iconic hat from the movie.

I also added a large clock pendant to the side of the hat, representing the Mad Hatter’s obsession with time.

### Abstract Shadow Concept Costume

One unique Halloween costume I’ve done in the past was a “Shadow.” It was quite an interesting concept because instead of being a specific character or creature, I was just an abstract concept. The idea came to me when I was thinking about how shadows are always present but often overlooked.

To make the costume, I used black clothes from head to toe, including gloves and a ski mask. I also used black body paint to cover any exposed skin. The tricky part was the backdrop—I bought a large piece of black fabric and cut out a silhouette of myself in a creepy pose. I then attached it to a lightweight frame that I could carry on my back, so it looked like my shadow was standing up behind me.

On Halloween night, I went around the neighborhood with my friends, and it was hilarious to see people’s reactions. Some were confused, some were amused, and some were genuinely creeped out. It was a lot of fun being a “Shadow” for a night, and it was definitely a Halloween to remember.

### Beyoncé Renaissance Tour Inspired Attire

You don’t need Halloween to take inspiration from Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, but it is the best opportunity to assemble your best dazzling pink (or all-silver) outfit. We’re still recovering from the star’s sparkle-adorned leotard and matching thigh boots, worn in July. You’ll have just as much fun sourcing these items as you will wearing them to your costume party, regardless of the look you choose. Any of her numerous catsuits or flowing gowns will work just fine.

To recreate this ensemble, however, you’ll need a hot pink leotard and the loudest, most vibrant boots you can find. You might even try glitter-coating them yourself at home. And don’t forget the padded glasses.

### Rhyme-Based “Miss Mary Mack” Costume

I took the children’s rhyme, “Miss Mary Mack,” and turned it into a Halloween character. I dressed all in black and taped large silver circles down the back. I made a small fence as a prop and taped a paper elephant cutout on it, along with two cut-out quarters.

In case you’re not familiar with the rhyme, it goes: “Miss Mary Mack, all dressed in black, with silver buttons all down her back. She asked her mother for fifty cents / to see the elephant jump over the fence…”

A few people caught on. Most people didn’t. That’s okay; it was a little inside joke for those in the know.
