Five Things I’m Excited About

August 24, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

This is a good Friday five today. For those of you who are new to the blog, I name off the top five things that I’m excited about, and I encourage my readers to do the same. So without further adieu, here’s the list:

1) Going to the Notre Dame football game with four press passes. When I first requested the passes, I was referred to another person. Then another. Then another. The fourth person I talked with told me that requesting four press passes to the first Notre Dame football game of the season was a tall order for the New York Times.

But low and behold, Pursue the Passion will be in the Press Box when Notre Dame takes the field on September 1st. I could cry excitement just thinking about that game. I feel like Rudy.

2) We are in Madison today. I’ve never been to Madison, which is one of the top college towns in the nation. I’m excited about seeing what State street and the Badgers are all about.

3) We will be in Chicago on Sunday, the 26th through Friday the 31st. Chicago is one of my favorite cities. Last year we had twenty-one interviews, and I’m excited about reuniting with some of those folks while meeting many more passionate Chicagoans.

4) One of the things we’ll be doing in Chicago is going to the Sheridan State Penitentiary to interview a guest speaker…in prison. I’ve never been to a prison before. We’ll be in the actual prison, hearing this man, a former maximum security inmate turned warden, deliver his message to the inmates and us. That will be inspiring, and a humbling experience.

5) If you haven’t already seen it, we have VIDEO on our site now! Check out the interview blog and see for yourself. Our writeups have come to life through some excellent video content Zach and Jay are producing daily. I’m excited because we will have some form of video up every day for you to actually join the journey, and see what we see in our interviews. That is like, the coolest thing ever for me.

Here is just one of the many to come:

Friday Five from Vegas

August 17, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

It’s time to get excited again. It’s Friday! Here are the five things I am excited about on the first Friday of the second leg of our tour, coming at you live from Las Vegas.

5) Starting the second leg of our tour. If the first month of the journey proves to be reflective of what’s to come, then we are all in for a treat. Ten thousand miles, thirty cities, and over a hundred and twenty interviews is what has me bubbling on this first day of the second leg.

And its going to sound corny/stupid/unbelievable, but I’m exciting to be living in a RV again. I missed crashing on the couch and parking places never known to be RV suitable. It’s good to be on the road again.

On the road again...

4) I’m excited to have made it through a little RV adversity yesterday. About thirty miles into our two month adventure, we find ourselves caught in a harsh dust storm in Phoenix. After hearing a loud WHAM, I look at our side mirror to see that the RV’s awning has unfolded itself and has extended about six feet. I yelled at Zach to pull over, which he did, and we got out to a face full of dust and strong winds. One of the awning legs had completely snapped off, which was duck taped back together, as was the awning that had defiantly disclosed itself.

Zach looked like Rambo up on the roof when he was fixing everything. With duck tape in between his teeth, wind threatening and him hanging off the side…it was truly an action packed moment. I’m excited that we made it through that dust storm, that the duct tape held up, and that Zach is the man.

The crew duct tapes everything in a dust storm

3) I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for a line up of interviews like we have today.

Gamal Aziz, COO of MGM Grand, a guy who came from Egypt after earning his bachelors degree at the University of Cairo to Las Vegas to become one of the most respected leaders in the gaming industry.

Renee West, President of Excalibur, is the first female executive to oversee operations of a property on the Las Vegas strip.

Robyn Williams, Founder of ChoiceCenter Worldwide, who developed a training center designed for high performers like athletes, Fortune 500 COO’s, and other business execs.

Noah is also going to interview the Production Manager for Spam-a-lot, the Broadway like show playing at the Wynn Resort. It should be quite a day.

2) I’m stoked that we are heading to Mount Rushmore on Sunday. None of us have ever been, so it should be pretty cool.

1) I’m excited that Danielle Ouellette, an avid reader and consistent commenter on this site, conducted her own Pursue the Passion-like interview in Boston. Danielle, a junior in college, is the first student to participate in a program I’m trying to develop, which connects students with alumni and members of the community for interviews and advice. Cheers to getting a program like this its first baby step.

Friday Five

August 10, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

For those of you who are like me, who often lose track of what day it is, I got news for you…it’s Friday. And when it’s Friday on this blog, you have to read about the five things I’m excited about.

Love it or hate it, here are the five things I’m excited about today.

5) You know you’re old when you’re excited about getting your oil changed. But I am. We’ve traveled over 5,000 miles in our RV, and I’m excited about getting the oil changed because I don’t want that thing breaking down on us.

4) I’m still excited about the “blockbuster” scheduling deal we pulled off earlier in the week. For those of you who didn’t read about it in the news, we traded Lawrence, Kansas for Mount Rushmore and Minneapolis. Check out our tour schedule to see the implications.

3) My mom and little sister are coming to town tomorrow, and I’m excited about having them. I’m especially enthusiastic about the trip because my little sis is looking for a job right now, and I’m going to spend the weekend trying to recruit her onto the PTP team.

So you might see another Farmiloe in the mix soon.

My lil' sis is on the left, followed by my mom, then me, Zach, Jay, and Dan Dan the Man.

2) Yesterday I found a great coffee shop to work in. I love to work in coffee shops because there is so much caffeinated energy I can feed off of without ever taking a sip of espresso. I’m excited about making that place my home base.

1) The number one thing I’m excited about is that I get to interviewer a rapper later today. Noah Pollock lined up an interview with Living Legend member “Lucky I Am” while the group is in Arizona on their “Paid Dues” tour. It’s cool to think that this Friday I’m interviewing a rapper, and next Friday I’ll be interviewing the CEO of MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Damn I love diversity.

5) Being on the Good Day Colorado TV show this morning. It’s always exciting to be on TV.

4) Albuquerque?

3) Seeing my girlfriend. One of the toughest things about being on the road is being away. It’s going to be good to go home and hang out.

2) Resting and reflecting in a hundred and fifteen degree desert heat…in air conditioning.

1) Feedback. From you. We want you to call the PASSION line, at (602) 796-3610 and tell us what you think about the first leg of the tour, us, or whatever is on your mind. One of our talented representatives would be happy to hear any rants, raves, suggestions, and especially, feedback.

5 Things I’m Excited About

Friday, Friday, Friday. I love Friday. Here are the 5 things I am excited about as I write this list in Seattle.

5) I’m excited about appearing on ABC’s Northwest Afternoon today in Seattle. Actually, I’m a little nervous. We have a six minute, twenty second televison segment that will go out to a large audience including about thirty people watching live from the set. I don’t know what the hell is going to happen, but I’m excited to find out.

4) I’m excited about going to Yellowstone National Park and camping for two days. We leave for Spokane tomorrow, and will then taking off to Yellowstone to interview a park ranger and possibly a cuddly looking bear.

3) Noah and Zach dumped the hazardous human waste that was accumulating in the “black” tank of the RV. Nothing else needs to be said about this.

2) I’m excited about going to the Seattle Space Needle today to conduct impromptu interviews. And to try and top this photo that I took on the last tour…

Brett and Tamir at the Needle

1) I am extremely excited about showing video from our interviews and our tour on this site. The video allows every dedicated reader that has labored through our writeups to join our journey through the beauty of multimedia. Jay Whiting, our multimedia director, is proud to present you with just one of the videos we will be posting on a daily basis…

5 Things I’m Excited About on a Friday

July 20, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

It’s that time to get excited…it’s Friday! Here are the 5 things I’m excited about after the third week on the Pursue the Passion Tour.

1) Due to being well connected in California, roughing it out on the road hasn’t exactly been so “rough” in the past few weeks. There has been only one night where the four of us have slept in the RV. I’m excited about getting out of our comfort zone and seeing how our team functions in close quarters as we leave for Portland on Sunday morning.

2) I’m still excited about the interview I had yesterday with Gerard Nebesky, a extreme adventurer and easy going Aussie who cooked us paella out of the back of his Toyota Landcruiser in a sleepy town called Occidental in California. That guy was awesome, and made sure that we got a good paella meal before he ran off to cook paella for George Bush Sr., Bill Clinton, and other very important people who ate the same stuff as us last night.

3) I’m excited about going out in my hometown of Santa Rosa tonight. We will be starting off the night at our Passion Hour, held at Sugar Salon, 1233 College Avenue at 5:30-7pm (join us!), then going to Ausiello’s Grill and Upper Fourth. Both of the bars we are going to are directly connected to the interviews we did yesterday, which is one of the reasons why we’re going.

4) I’m still excited about taking my little sister Janae around as part of our “Passionger Program” on Wednesday in San Francisco. She got to get some film experience to accompany her media arts major, plus go to the top of the TransAmerica building. It was cool to take her along.

5) It’s been quite a journey so far, with each day bringing new surprises, and I’m excited to see what’s next.

5 Things I’m Excited About on Friday the 13th

July 13, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

Today is Friday the 13th, and it’s time to get excited. Here are the top 5 things I’m excited about after the first two weeks of the tour.

1) I’m excited to leave Los Angeles traffic.

Los Angeles Traffic

2) I’m excited about getting the refrigerator to work. Zach and I tinkered around with it last night and now we have cold Kronik energy drinks to guzzle on the road.

3) I’m excited about applying all the advice we’ve received over the past two weeks to our tour and to my life. This advice ranges from video tips (Matt Heineman of the Young American’s Project) to being a fifteen year overnight success (David Kravetz).

4) I’m excited about the Pursue the Passion benefit barbeque Jay’s parents are throwing us this Saturday. Jay’s family has been extremely generous to us over the past week, providing us with a place to stay, support, food, and little goodies to help us on the journey. They definitely haven’t made life on the road too rough.

5) I’m excited about interviewing Matt Flannery, co-founder of Kiva.org next Wednesday.

5 Things I’m Excited About on a Friday

July 6, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

Time to get excited…it’s Friday! It has been an eventful first week on tour, and here are the 5 things I am excited about onf a Friday.

1) I’m excited about learning from mistakes. Caught up in the excitement of the tour, I grossly overbooked our schedule during the first week of the tour. We have not even had a moment to check email because we are constantly rushing from interview to interview. I’m excited about making changes for the remaining eleven weeks of the tour so we don’t treat the tour like a 100 yard sprint, but more like an ultra marathon.

2) I’m excited about sharing the interviews with some of the extraordinary people we met this week. Once we correct the time management issue discussed above in #1, you will be reading about how passions develop with Pamela Slim to the importance of getting back to the basics with Sea World killer whale trainer Robin Sheets. Other interviews we conducted this week included Phoenix Suns controller Mary Gilbaugh and president Rick Welts, Jobing execs Brian Mohr and Scott Foreman, helicopter reporter Bruce Haffner, Fox 10 reporter Andrew Hasbun, editor of East West magazine Anita Malik, co-founder of Fairytale Brownies David Kravetz, professional speaker Rick Barrera, Sombrero Mexican food general manager Javier Correra Jr., San Diego Film Commission President Cathy Anderson, author Jackie Freiberg, Studio West owner Peter Dyson, and Monster Cable VP Donna Fabri.

3) One year ago on the first week of the Pursue the Passion tour the RV broke down. We had some minor troubles with the RV this week (the AC stopped working on a drive from Phoenix to San Diego, making it 112 degrees in the RV. The lock on the door stopped working, then worked too well after locking us in the RV… forcing us to exit out of the windows for an interview with Rick Barrera. Oh, and a minor “ant” problem that made us abandon our snacks) but all in all, the engine is still roaring and I’m excited about keeping it that way.

4) I’m excited to have our first “Passiongers” join us as part of a new program we are implementing into this tour, where we pick up recent college grads or people that don’t like their jobs for a day of interviews. Daniel Weber will be flying down to San Diego tonight to join us, and Taneika McClelland has been a Passionger throughout the week.

5) I’m excited about seeing my team members develop. The roles and responsibilities they’ve undertaken on the tour has been overwhelming for everyone so far, but I can see that the cards are stacked to see these guys succeed and grow. I’m excited to see if what I envision for them will come true.

5 Things I’m Excited about on a Friday 6-29-07

June 29, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

It’s that time again to get excited on Friday. Here are five things I’m excited about, besides my little sister Janae turning 20 today…Happy Birthday!

1) Ummmm….how about kicking off the Pursue the Passion tour on Monday? The 14,000 mile, 90 day tour begins July 2nd and will be the opportunity of a lifetime. I have no idea what will happen, but I’m excited to find out.

2) I’m excited to pick up a completely wrapped RV today. The thirty foot RV we are taking around the country is going to look like a tour bus. I can’t wait to see it.

3) I’m excited that I am meeting with Good Morning Arizona traffic reporter Bruce Haffner on Tuesday for an interview in his helicopter. I have to be at the airfield at 5:15am and its a good possibility I will taker my first ever helicopter ride. I’m excited about the possibility of being in for three hours to get majestic views of the Phoenix desert.

4) I’m excited about being featured in the Phoenix Business Journal today. I haven’t seen the article yet, so if you find it, send it to me.

5) I’m excited about hosting the first ever Passion Hour event at Half Moon Grill on Monday at 6pm-7:00pm in Phoenix. We are inviting Phoenicians and friends who are interested in the trip, and like minded passionate professionals to connect for a little after hours networking. Should be a great time, and if you’re not in Phoenix, we will be in your city shortly. Come join us and you can check out our RV!

5 Things I’m Excited about on a Friday 6-22-07

June 22, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

It’s that time of the week to get excited again! Here are the five things I am excited about on the first Friday of summer.

1) I am excited about getting an in-kind sponsorship from Kronik Energy Drinks. Yesterday Jay and I went to go pick up 4 cases of their beverages that are named Grind, Low Carb, Energy, and Entourage. Jay sampled the Entourage while I stuck to the Grind.

I’m excited about using these drinks to get through the long days on the road and the early morning interviews.

2) Yesterday I wrote the biggest check I’ve ever written in my life to purchase the newest 30 foot edition to our team, the RV Arvydis Sabonis. I’m excited because I’m now an RV owner! We have some video in the works that captures the whole experience, so stay tuned.

3) Many of you have seen my e-book, but I still have dreams of writing a “real” book about my experiences on the 2006 tour. I’m excited because this week I found inspiration in a few different areas and decided to go back to the drawing board with how I would write the book. I’m excited about getting down to business this weekend.

4) I’m excited Jay Whiting got a hair cut. It was getting scary for a minute there, and now he looks so fresh and so clean.

5) I’m excited to have booked some really cool interviews this week. The list includes a Sea World Killer Whale trainer in San Diego, a tattoo artist in Venice Beach, a bodybuilder on Muscle Beach, and the founder of Fairytale Brownies in Phoenix.

Bonus: I’m excited it’s Zach’s last day of work before he joins the PTP Team!

I want to know what you’re excited about! Comment below…
