Sleeping at an Auto Body Shop Parking Lot in Hastings, New York

It would have been nice to have been writing this blog post from the picturesque Thousand Islands in Central New York, camping next to Jay’s uncle with full hookups and showers.
Instead, we are sleeping in the parking lot of an auto repair shop in between the cities of Hastings and Cicero, waiting for the shop to open so we can get the A/C compressor fixed.
You see, the A/C compressor snapped the serpentine belt, which then caused us to lose our power steering and severely affected our brakes. We essentially became a moving, six ton, 30 foot danger to all motorists and pedestrians around us.
So that’s why we are in this parking lot, waiting for this shop to open so we might have an outside chance at still having a campus day at Syracuse University.

Those darn serpentine belts will get you every time. It just goes to show you that your “glamorous” adventure has some reality and somber moments as well. You continue to experience all the fullness and extremes of your journey. (I still can’t believe you stayed in a room in Vegas with 7 flat screen TVs….) I hope you get back on the road soon.

Good Luck, i know how you feel!!!! My timing belt, and gasket head are finally done today! I hate the feeling of being inconvienced when you have plans, and that in return adds on unneccessary stress!

Definitely didn’t make it to campus day. But did have a helluva day at Mike’s Service Center in Central Town, NY.

Brett - When they install the new belt, pick up a spare for the trip back! I lost one on a spring break road-trip and talked a service shop at a car dealer into re-opening late on a Friday night so I could re-install it and not miss a weekend!
Call me any time for installation instructions! Ha!
