Dinner Party

August 29, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

It has been awhile since we have had a never eat alone lunch. And I miss them. I miss people joining us for an afternoon sandwich to tell us what they hate about their job, and why they stick with a position they despise. But oddly enough, the never eat alone lunches have taken a back seat to something we enjoy even more.

Dinner Parties.

On Sunday we attended a dinner party thirty miles outside of Chicago. In attendance was a telephone repairman who has loved his job for the last 27 years, a pediatric neuro-psychologist, and a life coach. It was quite a gathering of amazing people, and it turned out to be an excellent evening.

We heard about how the telephone repairman had a true moment of honesty at fifteen years old, when he was shot in the face, and twice in the back after a drug deal went awry. Bleeding on the floor of his apartment, this guy promised to himself that if he made it out of this life threatening predicament, then he would raise a family and find a steady job. Thirty years later, he has a job he loves and has three children.

Today we are parking the RV outside of the first person (besides my mom) to believe in our project, Chicago based entrepreneur Barry Moltz. We will be interviewing people all day from his driveway until it’s time for dinner, when we will be joining Barry’s family to see his son’s magic tricks and eat whatever is on the table.

I gladly accept the dinner party as a temporary substitute for the never eat alone lunches because there are no time limits, plenty of in depth conversations, and incredibly interesting people to talk with. What more could you ask for?

Cheers to the idea of a dinner party.
