Live Life

July 27, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

If you were to die today, would you die happy with the way you were living life?

Four men were killed in a mid-air helicopter crash in central Phoenix yesterday. When I went up for my first ever ride with Bruce Hafner a few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet two of them.

Jim Cox, a passionate cameraman, talked about how he one day dreamt of getting in the pilot seat and reporting. He was described to me by Bruce as one of the best photographers in America because of his unrelenting drive to get the shot that told the story to the viewer.

Rick Krolak was riding his bike around, like every morning, when he found me aimlessly walking down the runway in search of my helicopter ride. He happily guided me over to the place where I was supposed to be at, and merrily went on his way.

I’m sure that these guys were happy the way they lived. But a freak accident like this shows that life can sometimes take drastic, unexpected changes. Live it up.

Very sobering. When I saw it on the news, I immediately wondered if Jim was one of your interviews. I went to your website and confirmed it. Life is so fragile. What you and your team are doing is causing us all to ask a simple but deep question as to how we are living our very short lives. Thank you for your work.

This made me think of the conversation you and I had Brett, the night before you left Santa Rosa. You talked about how you felt about death and how the fear had been taken from you in that you just want to live fully without reservation because whatever is going to happen will happen.
I am sorry these gentlemen lost their lives. Their passion for what they were doing and what they had hoped to achieve was both admirable and inspiring. I am glad that you had a chance to spend time with them at what seemed to be a peak in their lives.

It’s kind of scary to think that one day we will not be around. We are never promised tomorrow, so live it up for today! It is very shocking and tragic what happened to these individuals. I remember after the interview with Bruce I asked PTP if he has had any close calls and you guys reported that question was not asked, but did mention the excitement in high-speed chases. Wow! These gentlemen died pursuing their passions. God bless those lost and their families.
