No free lunch

July 14, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Just before lunch, a door to door carpet salesman stopped by the screen door of the house we are staying at in Los Angeles. He wanted to do a carpet demonstration in the house, and asked if it was alright if he came in.

I said that he couldn’t do a carpet demonstration in the house, but I knew somewhere that he could. I walked him out to the driveway where our 30 foot RV glistened in the driveway.

For the next thirty minutes, the twenty year old Princeton student showed me how great his vacuum is. He shampooed my carpets. He vacuumed our beds. He sucked up dirt from the floor and shook his head after seeing how much dirt his magical device was able to pull up.

All the while I told him that four college grads living in an RV did not have two grand for his miracle vacuum. He persisted on, and when it was all said and done, the cost of getting the inside of the RV completely cleaned cost me thirty minutes and sternly saying no.

The same thing happend to me. I told the guy from the very beginning that I would not buy it, but I would enjoy him cleaning my carpets. He said that his compensation would be a frim “yes” or “no.” He said he couldn’t stand how many people said, “Oh, let me think about it.” He said he appreciated people that were firm, even with a “no.” So, not to let him down, I gave him a firm “no” in the end. But I did offer him a Corona.
