Tight Quarter Team Building

May 14, 2007 | by brett | Permalink

This past weekend the Pursue the Passion team embarked on a roadtrip to the high-spirited UC Santa Barbara campus so Class Project (Jay and Noah’s music group) could play at the Derpa-Sherpa-Palooza, a remarkable music festival featuring a variety of passionate artists. The music festival could not have gone any better, with Class Project being called back to the stage an astounding three times to entertain the half hippy, half hip-hop loving college crowd.

So what does this have to do with the journey?

Over the course of the weekend, it was apparent that there is nothing that will bond people like a roadtrip. Being in close quarters with someone for a prolonged amount of time gives you insight about their background, and as a result, gives you a deeper understanding of an individual.

We were in extremely tight quarters this weekend. At one point we slept in a two-bedroom apartment with fifteen college kids. We also logged a total of twenty hours in the Jeep. The result? A working relationship that improved immensely.

I would find it interesting to see if a business or corporation would be willing to try out the “Tight Quarter” team building theory. Do you think business teams would “bond or blow” on a roadtrip where they had four people stuffed in a SUV and had to crash on couches?

The thought is humorous to think of biz professionals crammed into cars going to Disneyland (for example). But at the same time it might help a business build a truly rewarding team connection like we experienced this weekend.

I stumbled across your site from EmployeeEvolution.com and think it’s really interesting. As a junior at Northeastern, the whole “what do you want to do after co-op & graduation?” question is really starting to weigh heavily. I think your articles are really interesting & definitely exciting to know that you don’t just have to find a job you’re satisfied doing, but one that you’re really passionate about. Here’s to the journey of the search!

Also, this entry reminded me of this: http://www.asofterworld.com/soft_apr27_2007.htm.

I definitely agree with the “Tight Quarters” idea. Keep the good stuff coming!
